What is GenR8 Change?
GenR8 change is a community-driven approach that involves the whole community and considers all the factors that influence our food and physical activity choices.
The mission is to create an environment that makes the healthy choice the easy choice.
The reality is that right now, as you drive your car up the street or as your purchase food and drink at your different facilities and events, the unhealthy choice is the easy choice, and often the only choice.
Why does this matter?
In early 2015, Deakin University and local agencies across the five shires of the Great South Coast, developed a worlds-first local monitoring system that allowed an accurate breakdown of the weight and health status of our children for the first time ever. We already had an idea that overweight and obesity levels have been on the increase throughout Australia, but were unclear on the actual magnitude.
The graph below highlights this new data, and showcases how Southern Grampians compares to the rest of the Great South Coast.
This matters because by the time children are in year 2, over one quarter of children are weighing outside the upper end of their healthy weight range
This matters because research shows that, unless things change, this will only increase.
This matters because not only does being overweight or obese increase risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 Diabetes and asthma, but can lead to psychological problems including depression, anxiety, bullying, self-esteem and bad behaviours.
This matters because these children will automatically be at a disadvantage regarding education attainment, employment status and income level compared to their peers in a healthy weight category.
But it's no one individual's fault.
As society and the way we work has changed, the environment we live in has changed.
The good news!
We can help fix this. Not on our own, but as a community, we can be part of the solution.
